Some Things Are Better Left for Teddy Bears, Bunnies, and Dinosaurs

A while ago I wrote about trying to find a Plush Buddha for Bug.  This is the only one I have found.

Doesn't he look like a pedaphile or at the very least a pervy swinger?  Needless to say, we are sticking with our Buddha made of wood.

I am, however, getting Bug a Barney doll for Christmas.  Say what you will about Barney. I have heard it all.  But frankly, I don't care.  Bug LOVES him and that is all that matters.  I am not buying it for me.  I am buying it for her.

We made a choice really early on to allow Sesame Street and Elmo. All their products and media are completely vertically integrated, which is both a benefit and drawback. What it allowed for is the ability to buy most licensed or branded toys in that brand. She can watch the shows and there's many videos on the internet and on DVD that are available both in Sesame Street and muppets. I work in public broadcasting now so I might be a little biased but I prefer the public broadcasters if only because there are no commercials in the middle. Barney is a PBS show too. But you know I just like Sesame Street more and now she's three and we've managed to keep her away from a lot of the really questionable stuff (no Princess movies or Hannah MOntana). This is all just a long way of saying that TV is such a hard thing to think about vis a vis children.

Yup. Totally agree. I prefer Sesame too. I hope she will grow into loving it more than Barney but right now I think it is because it is mostly all songs and a big dinosaur that it just keeps her really engaged---she loves music and dancing. She does love Elmo too though. I agree with you about allowing the PBS shows. Also, I think of a lot of the Barney bashing is homophobic and the other half is people who think about their likes before their kids likes. Cause it really is a harmless little show about being nice to people, however annoying it may be.

Hey,my kids were all over Barney.

He might not be my favorite, but if it keeps the kids entertained, that's all that counts.

You're right, the stuffed Buddha is creepy.

LMAO at the stuffed Buddah - it totally looks like a creepy swinger.

I think it's AWESOME that you support Bug's interest in Barney. My kids have gone through a ton of phases, most notably a Wiggles phase that lasted for quite some time (there were toys, live shows, you name it). And then there was a Disney Cars phase... Maggie has shown interest in both the Disney Princesses and Hannah Montana as well as My Little Pony, and while these things really annoy the hell out of me, I'm not forbidding them by any stretch of the imagination (although I do draw the line at Bratz b/c they look like hookers. Luckily she doesn't know what Bratz are yet). I guess when it comes down to it, I believe in placing a priority on what my kids like (age appropriate, etc. of course) versus what I want them to like - because I've seen a lot of parents that seem a lot more concerned with their kids only liking the "cool" non-commercial stuff that they prefer. I really, really hate Spongebob and recently when Bear wanted to watch it (he's never been that into it either but his friends watch it) he asked me "Do you like Spongebob, Mom?" And I told him truthfully, "No, I really don't. But we don't have to like the same things. You can decide for yourself if you like Spongebob or not." That's the way I feel about this subject. Great post - this is something I've thought a lot about.
